Single Record Project
March 2014, when I first started this project during my quest to find my own illustration style. Since a lot of my older illustrations have been inspired by the music I enjoy, I thought of making illustrations as if I was commissioned by the artist for the song, hence the name Single Record Project. It also served as practice and ground of experimentation of what I can draw. It’s a great feeling to be inspired with various types of music, and I feel that there’s more I can explore and express it visually. The artworks are generally based on the emotion and feeling I get as I listen; at times, something based on what I experienced with the song that day; sometimes also inspired by the song’s music video or the artists themselves that become the subject. There were really good ones that came up in the process, there are some that just don’t seem to work with the song as I thought back then. It’s a process of trial and error which keeps me growing. Together with this is the inspiring feedback I receive from people who have loved (or even not so) these artworks.
This project has actually led me to an actual album artwork (Autotelic’s Papunta Pabalik in 2016), and a lot of other fun illustration projects keep coming because of this. For as long as the music plays, so shall the pen continue to flow.
